Metropolis – silent film concert Live in Concert with Stockholm Concert Orchestra
Experience silent film as it should be seen – and heard – with a real orchestra. At the world-famous Skandia cinema in Stockholm, the Stockholm Concert Orchestra, conducted by George M. Morton, performs the film’s original music composed by Gottfried Huppertz.
The performance lasts 2 hours and 55 minutes, including a 25-minute intermission.
The film comes from the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden.
In the technological metropolis, the different social strata live completely separate lives. The upper class lives an elevated existence, while the workers at the bottom work in the shadow of technological progress.
Freder Fredersen, son of the city’s founder, falls in love with the labour activist Maria. Maria’s dedication makes Freder’s father fear that his power is under threat, so he commissions the inventor Rotwang to create a machine-man in Maria’s likeness to keep the workers in check.
But Rotwang, who lost the love of his life, Hel, to the powerful Joh Fredersen, creates a machine that incites the workers against the unjust system. The rise of the mob causes the working-class neighbourhoods to flood and now the hatred is turned against Maria …
